Google-backed Neobanking startup Open has entered the coveted unicorn club ie a valuation of more than $1bn. Open is the first unicorn to be minted after March. It is now the 100th unicorn from India, the 16th in 2022, and the first ever from Kerala. Seven months ago, Open had announced its series C funding at a $500mn valuation.

There were many high moments in the Indian startup ecosystem in 2021. Nine tech startups got listed on the public market, whereas four became unicorns monthly on an average. A unicorn, in startup jargon, is a company valued at or over $1 billion. These startups who are going to be unicorns in the near future are termed Soonicorns.
